Clay

The geography of West Lothian has many pockets of heavy clay laden soil. Once it has been separated from the soil, it has many uses because of its pliable and impermeable nature.

Applications & Uses 

Also known as ‘Puddle Clay’, ‘Restoration Clay’ or ‘Engineering Clay’, this is a high quality, consistent product which has a variety of uses. Its three main uses are as an impermeable liner for ponds, as a capping material for landfill cells and as a Class 2A General Cohesive Fill as per Series 600 Specification for Highway Works to add bulk to an area for example, when building roads.

EPD

Brewster Brothers are the first aggregates producer in the UK to achieve an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for recycled aggregates. This has been independently verified by BRE Group. The impact of our EPD on our customers and the main contractors in their supply chains is that you now have access to accurate and transparent environmental impact data for your sustainability reporting.

Using the results from the EPD, we can provide you with accurate carbon savings for using our recycled aggregates versus the average for both virgin and other recycled aggregates according to the UK Government’s indices. How do we seperate and produce our clay?

  1. Step One
    During the recycling process, anything below 4mm (sand, silt and clay) is sent through to the sand plant where centrifugal force is used to separate the sand from the materials from each other.
  2. Step Two
    The silt and clay mix is then pumped from the thickening/clarifying tank to the buffer tanks before it is pumped into the filter press.
  3. Step Three
    High quality impermeable clay cakes are made by the filter press which uses a vice like action to squeeze the water from the clay slurry.

Where does it come from?

It is present in the excavation waste that comes to our plant for recycling. It is most usually found in loads of subsoil.
